POLESDEN LACEY HOUSE

Polesden Lacey, this historic location serves up some incredible trails. “This is a delicious house,” remarked Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother on her honeymoon at Polesden Lacey. This country retreat, only four miles from Dorking and junction 9 of the M25, has glorious views across the rolling Surrey hills and acres of countryside.  It was home to famous Edwardian hostess Mrs Greville, who entertained royalty and the celebrities of her time. The routes we have designed here in the Surrey hills are intended to test you and if there’s one word that describes this event it’s – Brutiful! With more ups and downs than a ride at Thorpe Park, this course will have you reaching for your water bottles faster than you know it. We don’t plot routes to make them easy – we want you to become a Maverick and challenge yourself. With 3 routes to choose from, there’s something for everyone here in Polesden. If you have family members who want to soak up the atmosphere then bring them along for a stroll in the historic grounds. Or they can cheer you on and grab a bite to eat from the guys at the venue. Whatever you decide, we’re sure you’ll have an epic day out here with the Mavericks, and remember – the outdoors awaits...

How it works

As with all Maverick events you can expect up to 3 on-course hydration and nutrition outposts provided by Skratch Labs. There will also be prizes for the winners of each distance, male and female.

As a guide you should always:
• Follow the on course signage
• Listen to on course marshals
• Take care when crossing roads
• Be considerate to others
• Please close all gates, DO NOT litter!

LYNTON

New for 2018, we have added a beast of a route. This is the toughest Inov-8 X Series route on our calendar, with over 2300m of elevation, it's 300m higher than the Inov-8 Snowdonia X Series event! That should give you some idea of the challenge that awaits you here in Devon.

We are sending you along part of The South West Coast Path which is England's longest waymarked long-distance footpath and a National Trail. It stretches for 630 miles (1,014 km), running from Minehead in Somerset, along the coasts of Devon and Cornwall, to Poole Harbour in Dorset. Since it rises and falls with every river mouth, it is also one of the more challenging trails. The total height climbed has been calculated to be 114,931 ft (35,031 m), almost four times the height of Mount Everest

The route starts at Caffyns Farm and heads along the coast path at Lynton, you will be met with towering cliffs and stunning sea views across to South Wales. Soak up the stunning sounds of seabirds nesting on the cliffs. As you venture along the coast you will enter the valley of rocks, a superb section of coast path well know for its herds of feral goats. This section is among the oldest Devonian rocks in north Devon and is highly fossil ferrous.

As you continue on your way you will become lost in the splendour. We take you to Foreland Point, a rocky headland which is the most northerly point along the Devon and Exmoor coastline.

The route then sweeps back inland towards some special forested sections that make you feel like you're back in the heart of Devon. One stand out area is Watersmeet, we know you will be enchanted by this section of the route. There are many other hidden gems on the Exmoor X Series event, we don’t want to spoil it too much for you, so come and join us! The outdoors awaits...

SUDELEY CASTLE

Back for the 4th  year in the Cotswold Hills, Britain’s first and biggest AONB, as well as the most quintessentially English place we’ve ever seen! Leaving from the grand Sudeley Castle in the heart of the Cotswold Hills and set in 1200 acres of estate land, this won’t be a walk in the park. Sitting nicely down in the bottom of a valley, the only way is up. It’ll be worth it though as the surrounding area is everything you’d expect to see from rural middle England. With technical single track, wooded trails and some locally famous national routes on the Cotswold Way, Gloucestershire Way and the Winchcombe Way.  The course won’t allow you to switch off for a second, but you’ll be thankful for that as it’ll allow you to take in your surroundings which you won’t want to miss.

Why not bring the family to take a wander around the beautiful Castle and Gardens. Sudeley is the only privately owned castle in England to have a queen buried in the garden – Katherine Parr, 6th wife of Henry VIII.

How it works

As with all Maverick events you can expect up to 3 on-course hydration and nutrition outposts provided by Skratch Labs. There will also be prizes for the winners of each distance, male and female.

As a guide you should always:
• Follow the on course signage

HOPE SPORTS CLUB

We welcome you to a whole new series; the Maverick X Series is designed to test your resolve and take you to the upper limits of your abilities. The Peak District X Series event is a must in your calendar for 2018 - it has been dubbed the Lake District of the Peaks.
You will leave the small village of Hope and head out towards Win Hill, an impressive climb taking you to 462m (1,516ft) with amazing views over the Ladybower Reservoir. The reservoir is situated in the Upper Derwent Valley at the heart of the Peaks National Park, in an area that is surrounded by magnificent countryside where water and woodland, topped by high moors meet in stunning fashion.
From there you will run the edge of the reservoir, but don’t open the legs up too much as you will need plenty in reserve to tackle Kinder Scout which is a high windswept upland gritstone plateau, most of which stands at around 600 metres above sea level. The highest point is Crowden Head, which at 631 metres is also the highest point in the Peak District. This is the largest and grandest of the great upland areas of the so-called 'Dark Peak' and it forms an imposing and fascinating area. This route just has to be seen to believed.

GROOMBRIDGE PLACE

We return to the impressive Groombridge Place – a moated manor house dating back to 1662 and home to the Bennet Family in Joe Wright’s film adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel, “Pride and Prejudice”.

Soak up the Garden of England in this end of the summer season trail run. Not too hilly but rolling enough to keep your heart rate up and with some more technical sections, your mind will be elsewhere! The Maverick Original Kent is a real treat.  With varying terrains from the impressive Harrison’s Rock, which looks like it’s straight out of a theme park, to the more open heathland of White Hill Down and the woodland of the RSPB Broadwater Nature Reserve.

We can’t think of a better place to bring the summer season to a close than here. Close to Royal Tunbridge Wells, the M25 and Brighton only 30 miles away, why not bring the family and make a day of it? Groombridge Place is offering all runners and families 25% off admission with lots to explore including outdoor adventure playgrounds in the Enchanted Forest, the fort and Crusoe’s World, with its authentic large wooden ship complete with rope bridges.

How it works

As with all Maverick events you can expect up to 3 on-course hydration and nutrition outposts provided by PH. There will also be prizes for the winners of each distance, male and female.

LLANBERIS

We welcome you to a whole new series; the Maverick X Series events are designed to test your resolve and take you to the upper limits of your abilities. We venture to The Snowdonia National Park known as Eryri in Welsh, a name that can be translated as “the place of the eagles”.

The park which covers 838 square miles is one of three national parks found in Wales, and the oldest - being designated in 1951.  The area of the Snowdonia National Park has so much to offer the trail runner that if you are visiting for the first time you will wonder why it took you so long.

The marathon route will summit Mt Snowdon and see you head down and cross over the mighty Glyder Faw, your second Peak at 1000m.  We are pretty confident that this is the toughest marathon that Snowdonia has seen.

The landscape is breathtaking and unique. There are nine mountain ranges here and they cover over half of the national park’s surface. But the mountains are not the only reason people are enchanted by this landscape. There are many river gorges, waterfalls and valleys. Forests are filled with ash, oak, rowan and hazel trees.

STONOR PARK

Welcome to the Maverick Original Oxforshire, starting from the beautiful Stonor Park. This is one of the oldest family estates still lived in today – but it’s no museum. As the oldest member of the Stonor family, the house has a thousand stories to tell.

As well as being architecturally fascinating each room contains a lifetime of experience and anecdotes. Discover art and treasures collected from across the globe and view historic maps and documents that reveal generations of service to the country. A stroll through this house is a vivid walk through history.

The route itself, keeping the theme running, is in The Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) which covers 324 square miles of countryside, stretching from the River Thames in southern Oxfordshire up through Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire to Hitchin in Hertfordshire. It is one of 38 AONB in England and Wales, which belong to the same family as National Parks. Its designation as an AONB in 1965 recognised that the Chiltern Hills contain some of the finest landscapes in the country which are worthy of protection at the highest level.

This location is ideal for city based trail runners with excellent transport links to nearby Henley-on-Thames. Put this on your list of fantastic trail runs for 2017 and become part of the Maverick family.  Remember – the outdoors awaits…

COWDRAY HOUSE

Welcome to the Maverick Silva Dark Series. If you enjoy trail running in the daylight then you are in for a real treat running in the dark! It's an amazing experience; your senses are heightened, you immerse yourself deep in the surroundings, with your head torch on the trails streak past you at warp speed, you concentrate on making that perfect foot placement so as not to take a tumble.

We return to the home of the 1st ever previous Dark Series event in Sussex - at the stunning Cowdray Park. We found this route pretty spooky in the daylight so taking to the trails around here under the moon brings a whole new element to this route. There is plenty to get the senses aroused as you head down the serpent trail, with tight conifers, the woodland is dense and dark. With only the hoot of an owl or the sound of a fox calling, you will really feel at one with nature.

This route takes in a varied terrain from woodland to open heath to sandy tracks and the occasional bog.

Suitable for all levels of trail runners and with 3 routes to choose from it’s an event you should put in your calendar. And remember - The Darkness Awaits...

Dark Dorset had to join the series for 2018. Dorset is the home of Maverick Race and we head to the secluded location of Burnbake, deep in Rempstone Forest. A perfect location for our pre-Xmas Dark event, the route takes in woodland, heath and some open pastures. Rempstone Forest is a stone's throw away from Poole Harbour and parts of the route will take you along the tributaries that supply water to the famous RSPB Arne Reserve. This area is famous for its birdlife and whilst running the trails around Rempstone you might be lucky enough to see Sika deer or the odd barn owl! The Dorset Dark routes are designed for all levels of runner, with very little elevation these 3 routes can test you in a different way......Open up the legs and hit a PB in the Dark......The Darkness awaits...

It's an amazing experience; your senses are heightened, you immerse yourself deep in the surroundings, with your head torch on the trails streak past you at warp speed, you concentrate on making that perfect foot placement so as not to take a tumble.

Oxfordshire Dark - why not! Starting and finishing in the Culden Faw Estate which is split by the River Thames and nestled in the Chiltern Hills, this location can only be described as quintessential middle England. We love the Oxfordshire Original Series event, so it was only fitting that we experience this area in the dark. The 3 routes are all set in the estate which is home to fallow deer and wallabies......yep, we have actually seen a wallaby there! All the routes are relatively challenging and with 3 to choose from there is something for everyone.

This will be our first event in 2019 and there is a distinct possibility you could even be running in the snow! Make sure you start the season strong and put this Dark Series event in your calendar as it's going to be a corker!....... And remember - The Darkness Awaits...

KILVE COURT

Returning for 2017 and welcoming back the tremendous Quantock Hills, this is a seriously good route.  Not only are the views captivating - the trails are brutal! The routes here are set to test your resolve and determination.

With views of the Bristol Channel, Wales, Blackdown Hills, Exmoor and the Somerset Levels you should be as inspired as one of our greatest poets, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, once was.

Team Maverick have searched the south for the finest and toughest routes.  We want you to leave our event with, not only, an enormous sense of achievement but also with the beauty of the English countryside etched in to your minds. We have continued our theme of bringing you another route in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. We hope you will be as taken aback as we were after running this route, with a mosaic of heathland hill tops and valley woodlands. Take in fantastic views across the hills, look out for red deer on the adjacent hill tops and the ancient oak pollards in Willoughby Cleeve.
